New San Gabriel and Santa Ines Series Modules are Pre-certified to Deliver Drop-In Wireless Connectivity to a Wide-Range of Applications

Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park — Taiwan's "Silicon Valley” and FREMONT, Calif., December 23, 2009 – One of the world’s leading network and computer peripheral IC providers, Realtek Semiconductor Corp., and Unigen Corp. today announce a new family of wireless modules based on Realtek’s 802.11b/g/n radio SOC. Unigen’s new San Gabriel and Santa Ines family offers a small module footprint with big performance. The modules are agency pre-certified to speed time-to-market and eliminate the need for costly RF design resources. The San Gabriel and Santa Ines family has members that target a wide-range of applications in the high bandwidth video, PC, industrial, and consumer markets.

The entire San Gabriel and Santa Ines product families meet all necessary Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) compliance in addition to Industry Canada (IC) certification and Australia New Zealand. The modules come with Modular Approval (MA) to ease the RF compliance burden that many OEMs would otherwise face. The high-performance San Gabriel and Santa Ines families features 2-3x times the transmission and receive range over the previous generation of 802.11b/g with data rates up to 300 mbps and extremely low power consumption as low as 100mA.

“Unigen’s specifications and testing are among the most stringent and exhaustive of any of our customers,” said Realtek’s Executive Vice President Jessy Chen. “Realtek has passed this rigorous battery of tests in full, and we are pleased to provide quality components that meet the speed, range, security, and energy efficiency criteria required by Unigen”.

Both the San Gabriel and Santa Ines are highly integrated module with MIMO (Multiple In, Multiple Out) Wireless LAN (WLAN) with USB 2.0 and SDIO network interfaces, complying with the IEEE 802.11n specification. They combine a MAC, 1T2R (San Gabriel) 2T2R (Santa Ines) capable baseband and RF in a single module providing a complete solution for a high-performance wireless client.

The San Gabriel and Santa Ines baseband implements Multiple Input, Multiple Output (MIMO) Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM). Features include two spatial streams, short Guard Interval (GI) of 400ns, spatial spreading, and support for both 20MHz and 40MHz channel bandwidth.

The San Gabriel and Santa Ines modules build in an enhanced signal detector, an adaptive frequency domain equalizer, and a soft-decision Viterbi decoder to alleviate severe multi-path effects and mutual interference in the reception of multiple streams. For better detection quality, receive diversity with Maximal-Ratio-Combine (MRC) applying up to two receive paths is implemented. Robust interference detection and suppression are provided to protect against Bluetooth, cordless phone, and microwave oven interference.

Both the San Gabriel and Santa Ines supports 802.11e for multimedia applications, 802.11i for security, and 802.11n for enhanced MAC protocol efficiency. The San Gabriel and Santa Ines provides simple legacy and 20MHz/40MHz co-existence mechanisms to ensure backward and network compatibility.

“The new San Gabriel and Santa Ines Series Modules are designed to fulfill an increasing range of applications precipitated by an unprecedented growth and demand for low cost high speed wireless requirements,” said Mark Morrissey, Vice President of Business Development for Unigen. “Unigen has produced these modules to date for the high bandwidth video applications such as HDTV 1080p; however, we see that the applications in gaming and PC are also starting to embrace the technology.”
